There is a trend in families using the office or den as the family area. This once belonged only to the living room. Most people even put their television and other media into the living room. Use the lamps for when the family gathers and then switch to overhead lighting for the working hours. Also using complimentary lamp shades to the drapes and rugs will unify the entire room.
