Trophies Down The Ages

Trophies symbolize victory. They are not only a sign of accomplishment but also a sweet memory of achievement. They always give great encouragement and motivation to the recipient. For this reason the trophy is usually designed to reflect the field in which the victor has accomplished something, like the depiction of a wrestler on a trophy from that particular sport.

Historically, trophies stood for success against enemy troops and were built in the battlefield by the winner. The trend started in Greece, where the shields and artillery of the vanquished army were picked by victors and exhibited with battle accounts etched on them. They were considered as offerings given to the deities for bringing them victory in the war. In fact the word trophy has come from the term ‘tropaion’, which is Greek for ‘defeat’.

Ancient Romans had a different way of raising trophies to their victories. They built tall pillars and columns that bore an engraved trophy high up for people to see and admire their victory. In later years, the kings and emperors started giving out chalices to the best sportsmen in the kingdom.

It takes a lot of effort to design an appropriate trophy. Just like other design tasks, even trophy designing needs a significant amount of analysis, market research and a detailed consideration of the materials to be used. A trophy should not just be remarkable but also durable enough to stay safe for decades as a prized possession of the recipient.

Today, a trophy may be given to signify victory in a sport, academic excellence or even success in one’s chosen career. Trophies come in myriad designs, sizes and with different provisions for engravings. The traditional metal design on top of a wooden stand has morphed into silver, gold or glass finish as well as designs of crystal. There are a number of outlets selling trophies nowadays in many shapes, styles and designs to select from. With so many options available, it is now an easy job to find or customize the right trophy for any event.
